 At present, a problem within an API routine is flagged by an NX_ERROR
 return value and the routine (e.g. NXopendata) invariably prints an error
 message to the screen. It would be useful if these messages could be
 disabled, and error conditions handled silently by the calling program. An
 expanded set of error return values or a means of interrogating the
 current error status would be useful under these circumstances.
