 Mark,

 can you confirm that you saw this issue on the trunk subversion checkout
 and not on the 4.0.0 .tar.gz distribution kit? Could you also please tell
 me:
 - the version of Linux you are using
 - the version of autoconf, automake and libtool on the system

 The --tag=CC argument is passed to libtool and I think it is probably a
 libtool version issue - i'm using 1.5.22 here
