 I don't think this is a good idea. The general practise is to keep third
 party stuff out unless you need to make changes.

 Would we try and use our version of minixml in favour of what is on the
 machine already (if any)?
 Why don't we include hdf5 and hdf4 as well. Or readline, etc.?
