 Another comment in the manual says that the value can (optionally) be
 surrounded with square brackets.

 Use of the ''name:type'' notation is not expected.  The fields referenced
 in the {{{axes}}} list must all be in the same group.

 Let's restrict this to a colon (or comma) delimited list.
