 I've received a number of suggestions from Mark. However all were storing
 that data in one dimension. A main selling point for HDF here is efficient
 storage of multidimensional data. If we lose this and increase the effort
 needed to provide a simple display of the data that will not go down well
 with the users.

 While the scheme suggested above looks a bit verbose on first sight, we
 are at the moment convinced that it solves all our problems.
