[NeXus-tech] Schema [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Nick,

The main thing that Freddie started doing was to convert the existing
meta-DTD to schema without changing the definitions. He was doing it by
hand because figuring out how to work with Darren was more time
consuming. A tool that can help automate the process would be greatly
appreciated.

While I do want to move towards an object oriented NeXus definition, I
want to finish with the current style before moving to this task. There
are many advantages to using schema over the meta-DTD and I am very
interested in getting to that stage.

Hi Freddie,

Ferdi's xslt scripts are for housekeeping of the meta-DTD. Not useful
for manipulating hierarchy.

Darren's UML work provided a method of housekeeping of the meta-DTD, and
a starting point for use of object oriented design; inheritance &
polymorphism.
In the document
http://www.webel.com.au/nexml/nha/NeXusBeans_dke_nha_DRAFT_2007-09-23.pd
f , Darren suggests candidate classes for polymorphism (see section 8).
For the purposes of this conversation, please ignore the java specific
references in the document, and the challenges of integrating java
generics into XML schema.

Mark also presented a UML description at NIAC Berlin in a similar vein
to what Darren has described.

I guess it comes down to whether we want to use models to design the
NeXus structure, or code in XML, and use an XML or UML tool to view the
result.

Regards,

Nick.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for posting your DTD converted schema files. How flexible is
the conversion process? When I started on the DTD -> schema process I
also wanted to add a new hierarchy of derived types to simplify the
layout and future class/definition creation by instrument editors. In
their current form the DTD converted files would need quite a bit of
editing to get them into this new style, but if it was possible to
modify the conversion process that could indeed reduce the workload
significantly.

Regards,

Freddie

Schema generation
How is Freddie travelling with his schema writing? I had a look at
http://definition.nexusformat.org/schema/1.0/. I've attached a zip file
of a conversion done by Ferdi Franceschini to relaxng schema
http://www.relaxng.org/ which was done generatively from the base
classes in Jan 07. This was done with a group of xslt scripts to refine
the metaDTD first to a valid XML file, then to a schema. rng is the
normative form, from which xsd can be generated. I've also attached the
generated NXdetector.xsd. Ferdi will provide more info on this technique
if required. I think it may reduce the workload significantly.

Regards,

Nick.
