These are the notes for using libtool to do it

sioning

l#Release-numbers

we have currently been using a default -version-info of "0:0:0" (hence
libNeXus.so.0.0.0 and an internal soname of libNeXus.so.0)

If I set the -version-info to "4:2:4" then we get a library name of
libNeXus.so.0.4.2 with an internal soname also of libNeXus.so.0 and
hence no break in previous application compatibility

If we want to have libNeXus.so.4.2.0 then we need to do it by hand and
set an soname of libNeXus.so.4 (but leaving a libnexus.so.0 around so as
not to break compatibility). The advantage of libtool is that it will
handle windows and mac versioning for us, but at the expense of slightly
worse visible version numbers.

What do people think

BTW I have added a NXgetversion function
