1. I added a matlab read/plot example.
2. IDL is more involved in that it only provides the low level HDF interface. We could:
(a) show the raw HDF calls from IDL, much like the C example,
(b) have users install nexus and use the napi idl interface, or
(c) extend Mark's pure IDL wrapper with a similar high level interface as matlab and link to the .pro file from the downloads page.
The IDL users I talked to locally would certainly prefer (c) which doesn't require a compiled binary.
3. Can someone else provide an Igor example?
4. Do we want examples from R or Mathematica?

I fixed a few typos and modified the writing section to show how to use h5py to read files and checked it in.
Similar examples in matlab, IDL and Igor would be useful.
I recommend moving the HDF C example to the manual in the section on interacting with nexus as HDF --- the impatient are not going to be programming in C.
A simple example on writing files in pure HDF would also be useful, preferably using a high level api.
Meanwhile, I'm going to think a little more about the python api, and whether I can leverage off the work that is already in h5py and pytables.
