[NeXus-tech] First draft of NeXus publication

I’ve pushed a (mildly adapted) Makefile for latex projects and it seems to work fine here.

Pete,

the requested rebuild. It is a bit involved:

latex nexus14aip
bibtext nexus14aip
latex nexus14aip
pdflatex nexus14aip

This is to get the references right.

Cheers,

Yes. It is time to request that input. I added a table yesterday that shows how multiple method instruments are presented. Can you rebuild the pdf? Verify that the \ref{} items are rendered properly. For me, they looked of and I could not understand why that was happening.

Shall we discuss this at the next telco?

yes, we should, I forgot yesterday. Shall we seek input from the wider committte before that?

Hi all,

I attached a new version with the comments from Pete, Herbert and Tobias
merged in. I also fixed the tables
and built a complete authors list with the tools provided by revtex. As
Tobias suggested, the source for the
paper are now on github, in the nexus_definitions/ csipaper directory.
Including the correct bibtex file.
Sorry, Pete.

Hi all,

I've made a few modifications to Pete's version.
Why don't we put that file into the definitions repo on github?

There are two more comments I could not address easily:

Scans:
I really think unrolling scans to 1D is a poor idea and multiple
dimensions are legal.

Changed to reflect MD scans as currently described in the manual.

But it also says you can discover what was scanned against what from
the NXdata group. How does that work?

You open the NXdata group of a scan and see:

   data[NP,xdim,ydim]
   rotation_angle[NP]
   polar_angle[NP]
  monitor1[NP]

and can deduce that rotation_angle and polar_angle were either varied or
logged during the
scan together with data collected on an area detector and a monitor.

Application definitions:
"data in a NeXus file is accessed by path"
This is may be the intention of 60% of the people 60% of the time. The
other 64% of the time this is wrong.

This results in 124% ? I changed this search for data.

Regards,

     Mark

If you can only have a single NXentry named "entry" there is no point
in having an entry in the first place. We have to allow more than a
single detector named "detector" and we need to encourage people
writing software that is supposed to read NeXus files to look around
for groups by type.

Regards,

Tobias

Mark:

Nice job.

Enclosed are my revisions. Various spelling was changed and some other
changes. Nothing very big. Without the bibliography file, it was not
possible to build the complete PDF. However, these changes compile by
latex (revtex) with no build errors.

Another URL citation for canSAS was added since that work is ongoing
and near completion as well.

The table organization that you present is most valuable. This content
is now missing in the manual and not easy to deduce with such a
presentation. Once you are settled on the design, I plan to put it
into the Design section at a "good" location. (Suggestions are
welcome.)

  Pete

Hi,

here is a first draft of a new publication on NeXus intended for
Reviews in Scientific Instrumentation (RSI).

There are still two things wrong with this draft:

- The proper attribution of NIAC. I have contacted the AIP helpline
about how they want to have that done.

- The lines in the tables are incorrect. I will fix this once we are
sure that this is the representation we

 want.

I think we can start discussing the content based on this draft.

When we are done with this I will ask an american colleague to
proofread this. The journal wants american english which I find a
challenge.

I included the text source files for people who wish to edit
themselves. But the revtex package is required to compile the latex.

Best Regards,

 Mark
