 May I suggest only to record the dimensions of the 'image' and not have
 the added "nD series of". Otherwise nothing is gained, because with the
 logic the in the above definition you'd record a 2D series of 1D data as
 3D as well.

 So you'd only ever have 1D, 2D, 3D. 0D is a short 1D dimension and if
 there are more than three spacial dimensions there are at least no
 detectors for them.

 If your data is 10x5x512x512 and intrinsic is 2D you know you have 2D
 series of 2D images.
