Hi Ray et al,

Sorry for throwing that out without comments. We were discussing that survey in the Teleconference and it looks like something that anyone can reply to. So in order to represent all our needs that could be good.

I don’t think there is a party line you need to represent. We’re also having some contacts with Lindsey from the HDF Group directly. Looks like they are taking more of an interest in their user communities at the moment.

Regards,

Tobias

Sorry to miss yet another tech call, but as it happens, I will be attending the RDA meeting, since Brian Matthews suggested that it would be a good chance to discuss data servers, and possible US/European cooperation. If there is an official party line on any of the questions below, I will do my best to represent it. I don’t mind answering some of these requests, but I don’t want to interfere if you already discussed how to respond.

Ray

Dear all,

I presume that most of you will not be able to make it to the IDW/RDA meeting in Denver. Your input would nevertheless be helpful and greatly appreciated. See the message from Lindsay (and apologies for possible double postings).

Best, Frank.

Hello PaNSIG and MDIIIG members,
In preparation for the upcoming RDA 8th Plenary in Denver, I am collecting instances of "HDF in the wild". That is, I want to know how you are using HDF, what conventions and wrappers you may be using around it, and are there ways to improve its usability for your community. I am asking you to provide me a few brief bits of information that I can include in a presentation to prepare us for a discussion on this topic.

I will be presenting a short intro to this discussion in the joint session with PaNSIG and the RDA/CODATA Materials Data, Infrastructure & Interoperability IG on "Granule metadata and data flows in data sharing and publications". The session been scheduled for Breakout 7 - Saturday 17 Sept, 09:00 - 10:30. This is an opportunity to share your methodologies, conventions and tools with others who may benefit from your work. We are very interested in connecting communities through knowledge and technology sharing.

I have created a <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aUc5Y8pkNjq3mXRXgZtz_9h5Z0QYj7N2FSoyH6MdLX0/edit?usp=sharing> google <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aUc5Y8pkNjq3mXRXgZtz_9h5Z0QYj7N2FSoyH6MdLX0/edit?usp=sharing> sheet<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aUc5Y8pkNjq3mXRXgZtz_9h5Z0QYj7N2FSoyH6MdLX0/edit?usp=sharing> where you can enter this information:

  *   Research Domain
  *   Data type(s)
  * Conventions (e.g. Self-created docker containers, community algorithms)
  *   Standards (e.g. ISO 19115*)
  *   API's (e.g. netCDF)
  * tools used with HDF (e.g. Mathematica, self-made)
  *   Preferred Languages (e.g Python, R)

All fields are optional though the purpose of this effort is to help you connect with other community members as well as help us get an understanding of your needs and desires. I look forward to a lively and informative discussion. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments.
Cheers,
Lindsay
