[NeXus-committee] NIAC2020 final session

Hi Everyone,

I have been doing some cleaning up and organising on Github and tried to put together more of an agenda for the final NIAC2020 session by adding another column (on the far right) of our Github project<https://github.com/nexusformat/NIAC/projects/1#column-11377920>. Of course, there is certainly room for further items to be added and for discussions to be revisited. This can be done prior to the meeting either through emails to the list, or by adding further issues to the Github project and further comments onto the associated Github issues.

Here is a zoom link for the final NIAC2020 session on Monday, October 26th, starting at UTC 13:00

https://psich.zoom.us/j/94545564641?pwd=SHpoTEhkOERHZ3I2MlJjeVRacHVaUT09

Meeting ID: 945 4556 4641
Password: 1234

I acknowledge that this NIAC meeting has been a bit of a bumpy ride and I have made some mistakes. COVID19 has forced us to figure out new ways of collaborating in a climate of restrictions and unpredictability. I thank you for your efforts and understanding.

Cheers,
Ben

Dear all,

I will just post my two cent worth here, because there may not be a better place.

We have a record number of members on the committee. Forgetting to invite the committee to the committee meeting may have been an isolated lapse. But the governance model that we are steering towards is that of an open source project, where those that do the work get to decide. Obviously open source projects run that way for a reason. And those that put in a lot of work should be heard and thanked.

So to make that clear: Thank you guys for all the work in the recent months and especially weeks!

But my point is: I have not seen an attempt to engage with the new members and involve them in the decision making. That would include setting the agenda. In fact Heike has opened a NIAC ticket, that received no perceivable attention. Instead the agenda for the ‘final NIAC2020 session” discusses proposals prepared by one subset of people _after_ they have been put to a (named) vote.

In NeXus history many decisions in the past have been non-controversial. But when rubberstamping by the committee is the only expected outcome, the facilities may not feel represented and their needs addressed by that governance model.

Best wishes,

Tobias

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for responding to the poll. The final NIAC2020 session will be on Monday, October 26th, starting at UTC 13:00.I strongly encourage anyone on the NIAC who doesn't already have a Github account to please sign up and let me know your username so that you can be added to the nexusformat project. This will make voting easier (by adding emojis to the Github comments).

The main agenda will be to discuss the proposals brought forward for voting, as listed here:

Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I will apologise for not publicising the NIAC2020 details properly on the email list. Thankfully, we were able to have some very productive discussions that were aided by Githubs organisational tools. You can review these discussions via:

1. The session minutes: https://www.nexusformat.org/NIAC2020minutes.html

2. The github project: https://github.com/nexusformat/NIAC/projects/1

3. The set of NIAC issues: https://github.com/nexusformat/NIAC/issues

4. The list of proposals brought forward for voting: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rl5tAywWW4l7wvMy-rCAg_DdwPuNCZYbYLodAQAlwO4/edit#gid=1462589617 (votes are cast by adding emojis)

The final session planned for today will begin soon (Session I at UTC21:00) and, although we have run out of planned topics, I will be present to discuss anything anyone wants to bring up. You can join the zoom meeting via https://ukri.zoom.us/j/99316368835?pwd=VU5ReGxidmdkV09MSEZMN2pUMWFBQT09 but note that this is not quite the end of NIAC2020.

A Code Camp is planned for Monday and Tuesday next week following a similar schedule of Zoom sessions that are being organised here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rl5tAywWW4l7wvMy-rCAg_DdwPuNCZYbYLodAQAlwO4/edit#gid=934732431

Following the Code Camp, we will hold a final NIAC2020 session in which to the issues can be further discussed and the votes finalised. This is to give a chance for people who were unable to attend the Zoom session of the past 2 days a fair chance to participate. It will also provide a chance to make NIAC decisions on issues that have arisen during the Code Camp. To decide the precise date for the final NIAC2020 session, please respond to the following poll by Monday, October 19th:

https://doodle.com/poll/vqvqbxwcr22m9vxa

The most fair time seems to be UTC 13:00, similar to when we typically have the Telcos. Note that DST will end in Europe on Oct 25th.

Cheers,

Ben
