a few observations:

on both HDF5 files, the default data set (/entry/data/data) is not
marked by any of the approved methods (signal=1, for example).

+1

/entry/instrument/detector/sensor_material
Why use lowercase "si" instead of correct atomic symbol: Si?
Is the "si" substance different from "Si"?

NXgeometry as noted before

I'm having trouble making plots using HDFview. (HDFview keeps reporting
Hdf5LibraryException when I try OpenAs on /entry/data/data from either
of the files and select Image and try to select the dim0, dim1, dim2
combination.) Can anyone describe the steps to visualize
/entry/data/data for *this* data?

Here is what HDFview shows for series_1_data_000001.h5:/entry/data/data
data (3024, 2)
     32-bit unsigned integer,    3 x 1065 x 1030
     Number of attributes = 2
         image_nr_high = 3
         image_nr_low = 1
