Since I had made an effort to understand the problem, I had another look at
curing it and think I succeeded this time. I thought I would submit the
changes so that others could give it a test. The commit message is fairly
detailed - or look at the CVS logs to see what I did.
I still think we should wait until Uwe gets back before releasing the next
version. There may be hidden problems with what I've done that I don't
understand.
Please try compiling the new version and see if it causes any problems with
the test programs. It seems to work for me.
